Don’t Get Taken For a Ride: The BMV Isn’t Behind the Wheel—It’s a Scammer
Have you received a strange text lately claiming to be from the Ohio BMV? It might look something like this:
“Your BMV record needs urgent verification. Tap here to update your info immediately: [suspicious link]”
This is a scam. It is not from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
Scammers are using fake texts that appear to come from legitimate sources like the BMV. Their goal? To trick you into clicking a malicious link that can steal your personal or financial information.
Why These Messages Are Dangerous
These phishing texts often create a false sense of urgency—telling you there’s a problem with your license, registration, or records. But the link included in the message can lead to fraudulent websites designed to:
-
Collect your Social Security number, credit card info, or banking login
-
Install malware on your phone
-
Compromise your identity and your money
How to Protect Yourself
If you get one of these messages, here’s what to do:
-
Do not click the link – It’s not safe.
-
Do not provide any personal or payment information.
-
Delete the message immediately.
-
When in doubt, contact the Ohio BMV directly using their official website or customer service number.
