Celebrating Our Nation’s 250th Anniversary
As we get set to celebrate the 250th anniversary (also known as a Semiquincentennial) of the United States and the founding of our country on July 4, we are marking the unique place our country holds in history and all the qualities that make our nation special.
Throughout our history, even when faced with adversity and challenges, we have continued to be guided by our key principles established at the founding of our nation, including democracy, freedom, and the pursuit of liberty and justice for all.
The Credit Union Movement in the United States is a direct reflection of many of those same principles: democratically-controlled financial institutions that provide members the freedom to decide how their cooperative Movement will serve the community in search of financial well-being for all.
While the Credit Union Movement may have started elsewhere, it has continued to thrive in America over the course of its nearly 100-year history. The credit union story often mirrors the story of America.
To be successful, both the United States and the Credit Union Movement have placed a high value on cooperation, the collective good, and the importance of community.
And while not perfect, both have continually strived to be better — more perfect — and sought to stay true to our founding ideals.
So amid the fireworks, cookouts, concerts, and celebrations, we look back on the values and principles that have allowed us to not only survive, but thrive, amid the changes that we have encountered.
So here at Educational Community Alliance Credit Union, as we look ahead to the next 250 years and beyond, we aren’t moving past those ideals, but instead doubling down on the importance of the fundamental values that make our Movement and our nation a beacon of hope and freedom here at home and around the world.
